Piedrasassi Santa Rita Hills Syrah 2017

In the 2016 vintage, we introduced a second source, the Patterson vineyard, to our Sta. Rita Hills bottling. Patterson lies on a north-facing slope of the Santa Rosa Hills, just above Sine Qua Non’s estate vineyard, 11 Confessions. Sebastiano sits opposite Patterson at high elevation on a steep south-facing slope at the eastern edge of the Sta. Rita Hills. Planted in 2007 on clay loam over limestone, the Syrah at Sebastiano is exposed to relentless Pacific winds. Now composed of two opposing and complementary vineyard sources, our Sta. Rita Hills cuvée assembles Syrah’s diverse aromatic expressions. Patterson Vineyard lends aromas of hunted game and freshly ground spices – think cinnamon bark and juniper – while Sebastiano contributes lush, brambly fruits. Together they display Syrah’s remarkable finesse: a grape variety peerless in its balance of concentration and precision.
