The Prison Block gets its name from a three-quarter-hectare section in our “Gimblett Stones” vineyard behind Roys Hill originally earmarked for the Hawke’s Bay Regional Correctional Facility. The Clone 337 Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted there produce tiny berries with intense colour, concentrated/complex flavours, ripe tannins, and balanced acidity. All the hallmarks necessary to produce a wine worthy of a single vineyard release.

Hand harvested fruit was destemmed to obtain 100% whole berries and transferred to a large closed-top fermenter. The wine was aged for 19 months in barrel.

A youthful, dark purple/magenta colour paves way to intense aromas of ripe blackcurrants and cassis, an enticing floral perfume, plus hints of liquorice, fresh cedar, and cocoa powder. The wine is dense and focused in the mouth yet retains the elegance, structure, and restraint characteristic of great Cabernet Sauvignon. Plentiful, ripe tannins, cedary oak and succulent acidity frame the concentrated fruit to produce a multi-layered, textural palate with exquisite balance and an exceptionally long finish. A magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon of power and poise that will reward cellaring for up to 15 years.

87 | Deep dense colour; stalky herbal aromas, a trifle green and stemmy. Tannins are hard and it lacks balancing fruit flavour, with a dip in the centre, and very tannic.

94 | Very smoky, black fruited cassis/plum aroma. Quite a bit of oak in support. Roasted chestnuts. Very supple and silky. Almost OTT - luxurious polished tannins and a silken texture. Maybe needs a bit more grip? But undeniably well made.

92 | Dark. Brooding. Slightly jubey. There is a distinct herbal vein like a whole bunch Shiraz. Green peppercorn accents. Variable ripeness? Polarising.

87 | dusty, subdued and needing more fruit profile, tar and a mineral tension , generic red fruited nose and palate before ending with a tannic edge, needs refinement
