ANNA LOUISE CUVEE MCC 2012

In certain years the opportunity presents itself to produce an exceptional Cap Classique. It is in these years that we strive to produce, always in limited production, our Anna Louise Cuvee. A culmination of excellence

IN THE VINEYARD

Only produced in select years with grapes from a, dry-land farmed, single block of Chardonnay on our beautiful farm in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, ensuring we express our sense of place in every vintage. Despite guyot pruning this block specifically for Cap Classique it is still considered low yielding, producing select bunches of superb Chardonnay with intense levels of acidity, perfect for creating a Cap Classique with impeccable aging potential.

WINEMAKING

Only the Cuvee fraction (400L/ton) of Chardonnay, gently extracted via whole bunch pressing, is used for the production of our Anna Louise. Fermention takes place in stainless steel tanks, to preserve acidity, before being bottled in December 2012. A lady of her caliber can’t be rushed, demonstrated by 7.5 years of lees aging followed by a further 5 years on cork before release. A dosage made of barrel fermented Chardonnay base wine adds another level of complexity and richness to this Cap Classique, allowing for minimum addition of sugar.

ENJOYMENT OF THE WINE

This wine is named in memory of a great grandmother, both elegant and endearing much like Anna Louise herself. A limited production of 3490 bottles will find their way into the hearts and homes of a select few Cap Classique affectionados. Citrus, green apple and patisserie flavours, with a taut nutty finish. Extensive cork ageing creates a rounder, more rich and multidimensional expression of Hemel-en-Aarde Chardonnay, balancing out it’s high natural acidity.

96 | The colour has deepened but on the palate the wine is super fresh. Red grapefruit, red apple. Autolysis adds complexity but doesn't take over. Long succulent finish. This is lovely.

96 | Full yellow, bright. Attractive buttered toast, roasted hazelnuts, peach, too, lots of aged characters here, very complex, big flavour, voluminous and very dry. Gripping, drying acidity to finish. A tad austere? Great food wine.

93 | Medium-straw hue, fine bead. Opens with a bouquet of a freshly baked almond croissant. Fresh and crisp with lean lemony acidity. Some toasty complexity building towards the finish. A more oxidative style, finishing with blanched almond.
