Nestled in the foothills of the highest mountain peak in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, at an elevation of 330m above sea level, are the vineyards of Domaine des Dieux – Place of the Gods. In a country known for its warmth and sunshine, we found a place of cool temperatures & maritime breezes, ranging in its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean by 7 km. Maximising the rich potential of our soils we planted virus-free Pinot Noir & Chardonnay vines, amongst other cultivars carefully chosen & matched to terroir. Rich clay soils flecked with decomposed bokkeveld shale act as a water buffer and seldom requires irrigation. Domaine des Dieux has been recognised for its Cap Classique production since 2009 and is consistently awarded for these wines, including SA’s best Cap Classique 3 times over the span of 8 years. In addition to Cap Classique we also produce small volumes of premium award winning wines that excel when paired with food. Having planted virus free vines in 2004 we hoped to ensure the longevity of our vineyards and are now reaping the benefits, bottling wines from healthy vineyards that are over 15 years old with a true expression of our terroir and complexity attributed to vineyard age. Since inception we adopted a philosophy of bottle ageing our wines before release, allowing tertiary development in the wine, maturation and integration.
As custodians of our farm, our dream was always to enrich the land, to leave it healthier and happier than when we received it and to create a symbiosis between the soils, our vines, the beneficial insects and animals that call our farm home. We are on a perpetual journey to farm more naturally and we know our undertaking to create healthy soils and healthy vines will not be accomplished overnight, it is a long term vision, but we have to be dedicated and unwavering if we wish to preserve and protect our 28ha of heaven on earth for generations to come. Our farm is the heart and soul of our wines, our sense of place.
